Cyber fraud call centre targeting US citizens unearthed in Lucknow

Lucknow, Sep 18 (UNI) In a major action, Uttar Pradesh police in Aliganj, Lucknow, uncovered an alleged cyber fraud call centre.
The call centre reportedly targeted American citizens and defrauded them. Police detained 16 people, including four women, at the spot.
Initial investigations revealed that the accused contacted American citizens under the guise of providing technical support and then obtained their personal and financial information to commit cyber fraud.
According to DCP North Amit Kumar Anand, a suspicious man was spotted during police patrols on Friday morning.
After questioning him, police raided Riddhya Plaza, near Novelty Cinema in Kapurthala, under the Aliganj police station area. Upon arrival, police discovered suspicious activity at the centre. Subsequently, they began questioning the staff present there.
Preliminary investigations revealed that people working at the center posed as providing technical support to US citizens. When a US citizen encountered a computer or software-related problem, they would contact the helpline.
Meanwhile, employees at the Lucknow center would attend the calls.
According to the police, the accused allegedly used this information to obtain details about people's computers, personal documents, and financial information under the pretence of fixing problems.
They are then accused of committing cyber fraud and financial crimes.
Police are now questioning all those detained. The operation of the center, the amount of fraud, the role of other individuals involved in the network, and associates based abroad are also being investigated.
Police are also examining electronic devices and other documents recovered from the centre.
Police investigations have revealed that the building where the call center was operating was rented approximately four months ago.
Most of the employees had joined only one to three months ago.
Currently, police are questioning all 16 individuals detained, and further investigations are underway.
The investigation is ongoing, and further action will be taken based on any new facts that emerge.
Police raided the fake call centre at 7 a.m. All employees working inside were detained and interrogated.
Police were stationed outside the center during this time, preventing anyone from entering. After the police gathered evidence through interrogation, they detained all the employees.
The center was completely evacuated. At 4 p.m., all employees were escorted out wearing masks.
