56 people, 107 animals killed in rain-related incidents in UP in 60 hours: Relief Commissioner

Lucknow, Sep 27 (UNI) At least 56 people and 107 animals have died in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh in the past 60 hours, while 1,021 houses were damaged amid heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions across the state, Relief Commissioner Dr Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said on Sunday.
Reviewing relief and rescue operations with District Magistrates and Additional District Magistrates of affected districts, the Relief Commissioner directed officials to ensure that relief and rescue operations were carried out without any negligence and that affected families received assistance promptly and sensitively.
He directed District Magistrates to personally meet families affected by the heavy rains, assess their problems and provide necessary assistance immediately. Officials are also asked to set timelines for relief and rescue operations and ensure their implementation.
Yashod said Uttar Pradesh received 66.5 mm of rainfall between September 25 and the morning of September 27, against the normal 7.6 mm during the period, recording 775 per cent more rainfall than normal.
As many as 56 of the state's 75 districts recorded excessive rainfall, he said. Farrukhabad recorded 7,385 per cent more rainfall than normal, followed by Kannauj at 5,664 per cent, Shahjahanpur at 4,408 per cent, Hamirpur at 4,240 per cent and Mahoba at 4,100 per cent.
Besides the 56 deaths, 46 people were injured and 1,021 houses were damaged due to heavy rainfall and storms during the period.
Seven deaths each were reported in Sitapur, five each in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur, and four each in Ayodhya and Gorakhpur.
Among the injured, seven were reported in Hardoi, five each in Mainpuri, Shravasti and Barabanki, and three each in Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri.
In animal casualties, Hardoi reported 28 deaths, Sitapur 16, Kannauj 14, Bahraich and Kanpur Dehat seven each, and Unnao six.Hardoi reported the highest number of damaged houses at 272, followed by Sitapur with 108, Chandauli 75, Auraiya 60, Gonda 54, Hamirpur 51, Shahjahanpur 47 and Bahraich 44.
The Relief Commissioner directed District Magistrates, Additional District Magistrates and disaster management officials to remain in the field and closely monitor relief and rescue operations. He also ordered priority distribution of relief material and immediate payment of permissible assistance in cases of deaths, injuries and house damage as per rules.
Officials were directed to immediately assess crop damage and provide compensation as per the prescribed norms. Alternative accommodation should be arranged for families whose houses have been damaged, wherever required, he said.
Yashod also directed officials to coordinate with public representatives and keep them informed about relief and rescue operations.Rescue and relief teams are continuing operations to evacuate people trapped in waterlogged areas and shift them to safer locations, where necessary assistance is being provided.The administration has appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged and flood-affected areas, maintain a safe distance from fast-flowing rivers and drains and follow official advisories.
