Uttarakhand: Dhami asks Forest officials to discover more tourism destinations, translocation of tigers from CTR

Dehradun, Oct 1 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today asked Forest officials to discover new tourist destinations in the state and also announced the start of second phase of tiger translocation from highly dense Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) to Rajaji National Park (RNP) soon.

Speaking to the Forest officials on the opening day of Wildlife Week in Dehradun, he said they must identify new tourist destinations in forest areas of Uttarakhand and develop them adequatly for wildlife tourism. He said, "officials must identify at least one new tourist destination in every district and develop facilities for tourists keeping their natural beauty intact. State government has included an agenda to set up a zoo in Haldwani in its manifesto. The project will be grounded soon ensuring the the zoo comes up as an important centre for wildlife conservation, environmental education and tourism activities."

Dhami further said, "Wildlife is an integral part of our faith, culture and traditions. Sanatan culture has always conveyed the message of co-existence between humans and nature. Animals and birds associated with our deities reflect this spirit of ours. Conservation of nature and wildlife has been part of our way of life since ages."
Speaking about his government's plan to enhance the prospect of wildlife tourism in Uttarakhand forest areas, the Chief Minister announced that his government will soon start the translocation of tigers from densily populated CTR to RNP with Uttarakhand.
"Second phase of tiger translocation project from Corbett Tiger Reserve to Rajaji Tiger Reserve is set to begin soon. Besides this strong prospects of snow leopard citing tourism in high-altitude Himalayan regions is being explored and will be exploited in coming days. Forest officials must speed up their snow leopard conservation efforts and develop proper tourist destinations."
He stressed that government's priority was to promote wildlife tourism with safe forests stays, eco-tourism and homestays.
Dhami said forest surveillance systems are being strengthened and a special tiger protection force in the Corbett and Rajaji Tiger Reserves Will be commissioned.

The Chief Minister affirmed his government's commitment to protecting wildlife while helping the victims of man-animal conflicts with due compensation. According to Dhami, his government has increased ex-gratia compensation amount provided in the deaths caused by wildlife attacks from Rs₹ 6 lakh to ₹ 10 lakh to help the victims' families.
"Apart from this, medical expenses of the persons injured in wildlife attacks are now being borne entirely by the state government in a move to express our commitment for the safety of the wildlife attack victims," added Dhami.
