BJP attacks Congress over ECI controversy, says SIR decisions taken unanimously

Shimla, September 27 (UNI)Himachal Pradesh BJP president Rajiv Bindal on Sunday accused the Congress of creating a nationwide controversy over the Election Commission's decisions. He said the poll panel's clarification on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) had exposed what he termed the party's "politics" against constitutional institutions.
Bindal said the Election Commission had made it clear that decisions, including those related to SIR, were decisions of the full Commission and that final decisions were taken unanimously. He said the Commission had also clarified that different views and observations expressed during deliberations were a normal part of the decision-making process. He alleged that the Congress had unnecessarily created an atmosphere in which constitutional institutions were being questioned. "Without any reason, creating such an atmosphere across the country, in which constitutional institutions are put in the dock, has become a habit of the Congress," Bindal said. He alleged that the Congress had repeatedly raised questions and made comments about constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission and the judiciary, and was attempting to divert attention from its political setbacks.
Bindal said the Congress was preparing to attribute its electoral defeats to the Election Commission.
He said the party had raised issues relating to EVMs, "vote theft" and SIR, but should instead examine the reasons for its political performance.
He said the Election Commission had on September 26 provided information regarding its decisions and clarifications on SIR and various issues related to the electoral process. However, Bindal acknowledged that criticism by opposition parties over earlier observations and objections within the Commission continued, with political parties raising questions on the issue.
The BJP leader also targeted the Himachal Pradesh Congress leadership, saying the state unit was participating in what he described as the same politics.
He said the state Congress leadership should understand that repeatedly questioning the credibility of constitutional institutions could not divert attention from political failures. "Congress should introspect on the real reasons for its defeat," he said. Bindal said that instead of blaming EVMs, electoral rolls, SIR and the Election Commission whenever election results did not go in its favour, the Congress should go among the people and examine its political shortcomings.
He maintained that the credibility of constitutional institutions was important for democracy and said political parties should focus on addressing their organisational and political weaknesses rather than attributing electoral setbacks to such institutions.
