Bukhari targets NC over unfulfilled poll promises

Srinagar, Sept 27 (UNI) Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the ruling National Conference (NC), accusing it of failing to fulfil its election promises and alleging that the government must be held accountable for any attempt at demographic change in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a public meeting at Natipora in Srinagar’s Chanapora constituency, Bukhari questioned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over alleged land purchases by outsiders, asking who permitted a Mumbai-based businessman to acquire land for a hotel in Syedpora and a Delhi-based company to purchase 150 kanals in Chattergul despite existing domicile provisions.
Bukhari also criticised the continued disruptions in the Legislative Assembly, saying people had given the NC a mandate to address their pressing concerns rather than engage in repeated uproar.
He alleged that two years after assuming office, the government had failed to fulfil its major electoral commitments, including restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, statehood, 200 units of free electricity and free gas cylinders.
“People voted for the NC believing its promises,” Bukhari said, accusing the party of repeatedly making commitments to secure votes and attain power.
He cited the NC’s past positions on plebiscite and greater autonomy, alleging that the party failed to pursue the autonomy resolution after passing it in 2000.
Bukhari also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate direct dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the youth, to address the prevailing “trust deficit”.
He alleged that many young people were facing difficulties in obtaining police verification for passports and jobs, while others remained in detention or were frequently called to police stations.
Questioning the government’s priorities, Bukhari said the Assembly should focus on employment, detainees and other issues affecting the daily lives of people instead of disruptions.
