Srinagar sizzles at 35.2 degrees C, highest June temperature in 20 years

Srinagar, June 19 (UNI) Kashmir witnessed an intense heatwave today, with several places including Srinagar recording their highest June temperature in decades.

The summer capital Srinagar sizzled at 35.2°C — its hottest June day in the past 20 years —surpassing the normal temperature by 6.8°C.

According to an independent weather observer, Faizan Arif, founder of Kashmir Weather, “This is the highest temperature recorded in Srinagar in the month of June since June 25, 2005, when the mercury had touched 36.5°C.”

The all-time highest June temperature for Srinagar remains 37.8°C, recorded on June 29, 1978.

Southern Kashmir also bore the brunt of the heat. Qazigund in Kulgam district recorded 34.7°C—its highest June temperature since 1988 and the third all-time highest. The previous second-highest was 35.3°C on June 27, 1988, while the record stood at 35.7°C on June 26, 1988.

Kokernag in Anantnag district also experienced intense heat, with the mercury touching 33.8°C —matching its second-highest June temperature ever, previously recorded on June 29, 1999. The all-time highest June temperature for the area remains 34.9°C, recorded on June 25, 2005.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6°C, while Kupwara touched 33.1°C and the famous ski resort of Gulmarg registered 25.9°C, marking a notably hot day across these popular destinations.

The weather across the Kashmir division is expected to remain mainly dry over the next 24 hours, offering no immediate respite from the ongoing heatwave in the region.

According to the meteorological department, the forecast for the subsequent two days indicates isolated to scattered light rain or thundershowers, which may bring slight relief from the prevailing hot conditions.
