Haryana steps up with extra wholesome food for malnourished children

Panchkula, Oct 8 (UNI) Children suffering from severe and moderate malnutrition in Haryana will receive additional nutritious food at Anganwadi centres under the Chief Minister Bal Poshan Yojana, as the state government seeks to address nutritional deficiencies among vulnerable children and improve their physical growth and development.
Under the initiative, children identified as suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and severe underweight conditions will be provided supplementary nutrition through the state's Anganwadi network, according to an official communication issued by the Women and Child Development Department.
The government has prescribed a weekly nutritional distribution schedule under which eligible children will receive churma, a traditional food preparation, twice a week and black chickpeas (kala chana) four days a week.
This initiative shines a spotlight on children most at risk, aiming to protect them from stunted growth and serious health challenges caused by poor nutrition.
According to the department, the objective is to ensure that children facing nutritional deficiencies receive additional dietary support during the crucial years of their physical and mental development.
The programme is intended to strengthen the existing supplementary nutrition system by providing locally familiar food items to children identified as nutritionally vulnerable.
Severe acute malnutrition is a serious condition associated with an increased risk of illness and mortality among young children, while moderate acute malnutrition also requires timely nutritional intervention to prevent further deterioration.
The programme arrives at a crucial time, as ongoing worries about childhood malnutrition threaten children's immunity, learning abilities, school success and lifelong well-being.
Anganwadi centres will serve as the delivery points for supplementary food under the programme, making the existing child welfare infrastructure central to its implementation.
The department has also appealed to parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive the nutritional support available under the scheme.
The government calls this initiative a key step in its larger mission to boost child nutrition and create a healthier future for Haryana.
