Chandigarh Mayor to be elected by show of hands, Manish Tewari welcomes move

Chandigarh, June 25 (UNI) Congress MP from Chandigarh Manish Tewari today welcomed the announcement by Chandigarh Administrator Gulabchand Kataria that instead of secret ballet, the mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, will be elected by the show of hands.
Tewari wrote on X that it was gratifying to note that a reform measure that he had proposed has finally been accepted.
"In the wake of the sordid Anil Masih saga when democracy was butchered in Chandigarh, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had passed a joint resolution in Chandigarh municipal corporation house in September- October 2024 demanding an election by a show of hands," he said, claiming that had this demand been accepted before the previous Mayor elections the results would have been totally different.
"Better late than never!" Tewari commented and indicated that now he would pursue the direct election of mayor for five years.
Notably, the Punjab governor and Chandigarh Administrator had yesterday announced that an amendment to Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996 would be approved according to which instead of secret ballet, the mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, will be elected by a show of hands.
