Sutlej river in spate: Shimla district admin puts SJVNL, NTPC on high alert

Shimla, June 25 (UNI) Amid a continuous rise in the water level of the Sutlej River during the ongoing monsoon, the Shimla district administration has put hydropower giants SJVNL and NTPC on high alert.

Directions have been issued to both companies to intensify real-time monitoring of dam water levels, regulate dam discharge, and ensure the flawless functioning of floodgates and siren warning systems to avert any flood-like situation.
The measures were announced during a disaster management review meeting chaired by Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) Rajesh Verma at the Sub Divisional Office in Sunni yesterday.
The SDM informed that three suspension bridges—Jashi, Bharada, and Magaan—connecting Shimla and Mandi districts via the Sutlej are now categorised as high-risk due to rising water levels. SJVNL has been instructed to ensure immediate safety measures around these key connecting structures.
Furthermore, the rising river poses a direct threat to several wards in the Sunni region, as well as institutions like the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Gau Sadan, and Mokshadham, all located close to the riverbanks. The heads of these institutions have been told to alert the administration instantly if the water level rises further.
Verma also directed the Jal Shakti Department to closely monitor water supply schemes near the river to ensure uninterrupted access to clean drinking water during the rains.
"All departments must maintain inter-agency coordination, relay alerts swiftly, and act immediately during emergencies," the SDM emphasised.
Representatives from NTPC, SJVNL, PWD, Jal Shakti, Police, ITI Sunni, local Panchayats, and affected wards were present in the meeting, marking a collective effort to stay ahead of potential disasters during the peak monsoon period.
