Monsoon arrives in Himachal, triggers rain & landslides

Shimla, June 20 (UNI) The southwest Monsoon set in over Himachal Pradesh on Friday, marking an early onset over parts of the state, including Shimla city. The arrival comes a week earlier than the previous year, when the monsoon reached on June 27.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that monsoon conditions are favourable for its further advancement into remaining parts of Himachal, Punjab, and Haryana in the next 2–3 days.
Following the monsoon’s entry, several parts of the state witnessed light to moderate rain. Nahan received 9 cm, Pandoh and Bijahi 3 cm each, and Pachhad and Rampur Bushahr recorded 2 cm. Gusty winds were also reported from Bajaura (37 km/h), and thunderstorms affected Sundernagar, Shimla, and Kangra.
The IMD has predicted a wet spell across the state from June 20 to June 25, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations during this period.
Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Mandi districts are expected to receive moderate to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Shimla, Solan, Kullu, Chamba, and Bilaspur are also likely to see light to moderate rain with gusty winds.
Shimla city and surrounding areas experienced reduced visibility and scattered showers on Thursday. Meanwhile, early monsoon showers triggered landslides at multiple locations.
A major landslide was reported at Jutogh Cantonment and Hatni ki Dhar near MES, temporarily blocking roads. Authorities swiftly cleared the debris, and no injuries were reported.
With the weather department issuing alerts for possible landslides, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions, residents have been advised to avoid vulnerable areas and follow government advisories. Flash floods, slippery roads, and disruptions to essential services may occur in low-lying and hilly regions.
The IMD also warned of further temperature drops by 2–4°C in the coming days, bringing relief from prevailing heat, especially in Una and Paonta Sahib where mercury soared above 38°C before the rains.
