Haryana Congress chief slams govt over mandi burden, Agniveer

Narnaul, Oct 6 (UNI) Haryana Congress president Rao Narendra Singh on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government over its handling of grain procurement and the Agniveer recruitment scheme, alleging that farmers were being saddled with additional costs while young people faced uncertainty over long-term employment.
Addressing block Congress conferences at Narnaul and Sihma in Mahendragarh district, Singh said farmers were already battling rising cultivation costs and difficulties in selling their produce and should not be forced to bear additional expenses for cleaning and sorting grain.
“Farmers are already troubled by inflation, rising input costs and agricultural problems. Instead of increasing their difficulties, the government should ensure proper procurement, lifting and timely payment in the mandis,” Singh said.
He objected in particular to what he described as a requirement for farmers to arrange electric grain-cleaning equipment, saying such a system would increase their financial burden.
“The government's job is to ensure that farmers get a fair price for their produce without unnecessary harassment in the mandi. Additional arrangements for cleaning grain should not be thrust upon them,” he said.
Singh said the government should first address bottlenecks in procurement, the movement of purchased grain, and payments, rather than shifting operational responsibilities onto farmers.
Turning to employment, the Congress leader attacked the Centre's Agnipath military recruitment scheme, saying the four-year service model had created uncertainty among young people aspiring to join the armed forces.
He said the issue had particular resonance in Haryana, which has traditionally sent a significant number of young people into the armed forces.
“After four years of service, a large number of young people are left facing the question of what comes next. A youth who gives some of the most important years of his life to serving the country deserves secure employment and a stable future,” Singh said.
He demanded greater opportunities for permanent recruitment and regular employment, accusing the government of failing to address concerns over job security among young people.
Singh also used the meetings to signal an intensified organisational drive by the Congress in Haryana, saying the party would expand its network down to village, ward and polling-booth levels.
“The real strength of the Congress is its workers. We will strengthen the organisation at every booth and establish direct communication with workers,” he said.
He asked party cadres to take the Congress's ‘Vote Bachao-Desh Bachao’ campaign door-to-door and link it with questions of voting rights, democracy and constitutional safeguards.
“The people's vote is their greatest strength in a democracy. Protecting that right is our responsibility,” Singh said.
He said Congress workers would continue raising issues concerning farmers, youth, labourers and other sections and asked the cadre to remain united and prepare for sustained grassroots mobilisation.
Mahendragarh district Congress president Satvir Yadav, Rao Hoshiar Singh, Sihma block president Dilip Singh and several district and block-level party functionaries attended the meetings.
