Sikh Intellectual Conclave: HP Governor highlights PM Modi’s initiatives to honour Sikh heritage, preserve its glorious legacy

Jammu, Oct 17 (UNI) The Governor of Himachal Pradesh Kavinder Gupta has called for strengthening social harmony, mutual respect and national unity, urging intellectuals and community leaders to uphold the timeless values of humanity, equality, service and brotherhood.
Addressing the Second Sikh Intellectual Conclave 2026, organised by the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial Trust (BBSBMT) here at Abhinav Theatre on Saturday, the Governor also honoured eminent intellectuals in recognition of their noteworthy contributions towards the development of society.
Recalling the legacy of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji, the Governor said that his life exemplified courage, sacrifice, justice and the protection of human dignity.
Inspired by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur fought against injustice and championed the rights of the disadvantaged. His life continues to inspire society to work for equality, justice and the welfare of the weakest sections.
The Governor highlighted the enduring relevance of Sikh Gurus’ teachings, particularly Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message of equality and universal brotherhood, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s courage in defending righteousness, and the supreme sacrifices of the four Sahibzadas.
He said the Sikh principle of “Sarbat da Bhala” — the welfare of all — offers a universal message of compassion, service and collective well-being.
Referring to initiatives undertaken by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for preserving and honouring Sikh heritage, the Governor mentioned the opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, the observance of December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas, and other measures reflecting respect for the faith, traditions and contributions of the Sikh community.
Emphasising the importance of social cohesion, Kavinder Gupta said Jammu and Kashmir has a rich shared heritage shaped by diverse faiths, languages and cultural traditions.
He observed that diversity is a source of strength and that preserving this legacy requires mutual respect, dialogue and a collective commitment to peace.
The Governor cautioned against attempts to create divisions in society and weaken the bonds of brotherhood.
He urged people, particularly intellectuals and community leaders, to act responsibly, verify information before sharing it and refrain from spreading rumours or provocative messages.
Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, the Governor called upon all sections of society to promote humanity, equality, selfless service and mutual understanding.
The Governor expressed confidence that the conclave would provide a meaningful platform for intellectual discourse, strengthen social bonds and inspire collective efforts towards nation-building.
Earlier, Mahant Manjeet Singh Ji, in his address, appreciated the initiative of organising the Second Sikh Intellectual Conclave, stating that such platforms play an important role in promoting Sikh philosophy, preserving the community’s rich heritage and fostering meaningful dialogue on social and contemporary issues.
He also lauded the efforts of Governor Kavinder Gupta towards honouring the legacy of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji, particularly his contribution from personal funds towards the installation of the latter’s statue.
He expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire future generations to follow the ideals of courage, sacrifice, service and justice embodied by the great Sikh warrior.
