Mehbooba meets Mirwaiz amid fresh political activity in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep (UNI) In a significant political development, PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday met Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his residence in Srinagar.
The meeting, their first interaction in years, comes amid heightened political activity in Jammu and Kashmir, with the ongoing Assembly session dominated by debates over statehood, autonomy and other issues concerning the region.
According to sources, the meeting was part of Mehbooba’s ongoing consultations with different sections of Kashmiri society.
While the details of Sunday’s discussion were not made public, and neither Mehbooba Mufti nor Mirwaiz has issued an official statement on the meeting so far, it is learnt that discussions covered pressing social concerns, particularly the challenges facing young people, as well as the prevailing political situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting assumes significance as it comes days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the J&K Legislative Assembly seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution also referred to earlier Assembly resolutions of 2000 and 2024, triggering strong objections from BJP legislators and disruption in the House.
The interaction between Mehbooba and Mirwaiz also follows their recent public convergence on social and cultural issues. Recently, both had separately raised objections to a proposed “Tantra in Silence” retreat in Gurez and urged the government to intervene.
