Omar seeks ‘corrective action’ on electoral rolls; Mehbooba warns India may resemble ‘banana republic’

Srinagar, Sep 23 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday called for “corrective action” over concerns surrounding the electoral process, saying that if people’s trust in elections is lost, “then what is left in the democracy?”, while PDP president Mehbooba Mufti warned that India could eventually resemble a “banana republic” if the alleged deletion and addition of names from electoral rolls continued.
The two leaders reacted to news report published in The Indian Express which said that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded at least 14 objections over a period of 10 months to decisions and communications that they said were issued without their knowledge or approval.
Omar Abdullah said the report was significant in the backdrop of concerns that have previously been raised over the functioning of the poll panel.
