Punjab Police bust suspected cross-border drug network, arrest two with 7.8 kg heroin

Chandigarh, Oct 14 (UNI) Punjab Police have arrested two suspected drug traffickers, including a woman, and seized 7.823 kg of heroin in Pathankot district, uncovering what investigators believe is a cross-border smuggling network with suspected links to Pakistan, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.
The accused were identified as Gurpanth, a resident of Vadala village in Amritsar Rural, and Harmanjeet Kaur of Dhianpur in Gurdaspur district.
Police said the arrests followed a two-stage intelligence-led operation in which a Special Branch team initially intercepted Gurpanth and recovered 590 grams of heroin.
Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Manpreet Singh said interrogation of the suspect and forensic examination of his mobile phone led investigators to a rented accommodation in Fatehgarh Churian.
A subsequent raid resulted in Harmanjeet Kaur's arrest and the recovery of another 7.233 kg of heroin, taking the total seizure to 7.823 kg.
Police said packets bearing Pakistani markings were recovered, suggesting possible cross-border connections.
DGP Yadav said investigators were examining digital evidence, videos relating to drug consignments and financial transactions to identify other members of the suspected trafficking network.
"Further investigation, including digital and technical analysis, is underway to trace the wider narcotics network, follow the financial trail and identify other persons involved," Yadav said.
Police said the recovered material could help establish the source of the consignment, its intended recipients and the possible involvement of additional suspects.
A case under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered at Sadar police station, Pathankot, on October 12.
The arrests form part of Punjab Police's ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign against drug trafficking.
