BJP burns Rahul Gandhi’s effigy in Panchkula over JNU sexual harassment allegations

Panchkula, Oct 13 (UNI) BJP workers, led by the party’s Mahila Morcha, staged a protest in Panchkula on Tuesday over sexual harassment allegations involving Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, burning an effigy of Rahul Gandhi and demanding the MP’s expulsion from the Congress.
Led by district BJP president Ajay Mittal, the protesters marched from the party’s district headquarters, Panchkamal, to MDC Chowk, raising slogans against the Congress leadership and accusing it of remaining silent on allegations concerning female students.
Kalka BJP MLA Shakti Rani Sharma also criticised the Congress over the controversy, calling for accountability and justice for the complainants.
Mittal demanded that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expel Akoijam from the Congress, seek his resignation from Parliament and apologise to the complainants.
“The BJP stands firmly for the dignity of women and justice for the complainants. Political parties must take a clear stand on issues concerning women's safety and dignity,” Mittal said.
He accused the Congress leadership of failing to demonstrate accountability and stressed that political influence should not obstruct a fair investigation.
BJP Mahila Morcha members and district party workers participated in the demonstration, demanding action against the MP and justice for the complainants.
The protest followed sexual harassment allegations against Akoijam relating to his tenure at JNU. The allegations do not constitute a finding of criminal guilt.
