Shanta Kumar urges Opposition to return to Parliament, says boycott reflects desperation

Palampur, October 12 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar on Sunday said it was unfortunate that the Opposition in the world’s largest democracy was allegedly dragging democratic processes out of Parliament and onto the streets.
Referring to a letter issued by 184 eminent personalities, including 42 former High Court and Supreme Court judges and 142 former IAS and IFS officers, he said they had endorsed the Election Commission’s actions.
Shanta Kumar appealed to the Opposition to abandon its confrontational approach and return to Parliament to raise its concerns through democratic means.
He described the Opposition as leaderless, fragmented and frustrated, and challenged its leaders to explain how Congress governments came to power after defeating the BJP in seven states, including Himachal Pradesh, in elections conducted by the same Election Commission.
He recalled that a similar political situation had arisen in the past, when former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee brought together 23 parties to form the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The parties agreed on a common programme, contested elections and formed a government, he said.
Shanta Kumar expressed hope that Opposition leaders would act with wisdom and follow the democratic path.
