Strict Action Against Ultrasound Centres Violating PC-PNDT Act: Vikram Katoch

Dharamshala, Oct 12 (UNI) District Health Officer Vikram Katoch on Monday warned of strict legal action against ultrasound centres violating the provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act, 1994, and stressed the need for public participation to prevent foetal sex determination and female foeticide.
Chairing a meeting of the District Advisory Committee and District Appropriate Authority in Dharamshala, Katoch said 19 inspections were conducted across Kangra district during the second quarter ending September 30, while three ultrasound centres completed their renewal process. As many as 137 awareness activities were also organised to highlight the importance of daughters and the harmful consequences of female foeticide.
The meeting considered nine cases seeking approval for ultrasound centres, of which five were granted ex-post facto approval. Other applicants were directed to complete the required formalities.
Katoch called for intensified monitoring, particularly of centres near state borders, and directed all facilities to display prominently a notice stating that foetal sex determination was not conducted there. He added that provisions existed to reward citizens providing information about violations to the Health Department.
He said compliance with the Act was mandatory and any violation would invite strict legal action. UNI AR CDS
