Himachal: Shimla police crack three jewellery snatching cases, arrest Doda man

Shimla, October 6 (UNI) Shimla district police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with three alleged jewellery snatching incidents in which women were targeted with chilli powder.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Mehar Panwar addressing media disclosed that the accused, identified as Jail Singh, a resident of Doda district, was arrested on October 5 following an investigation into three cases registered at Kumarasain police station.
The first case was registered on August 31 on the complaint of Seema Devi.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly threw chilli powder into her eyes near Jubbar and snatched earrings from both her ears before fleeing.
A similar incident was reported on September 14, when Suno Devi complained that a man threw chilli powder into her eyes while she was walking near Kandayali and allegedly snatched her gold earrings, she said.
In the third incident, reported on September 26, the accused allegedly targeted Kanku at her roadside eatery.
She said the man had visited the eatery for three consecutive days and on September 26 took advantage of her being alone, threw chilli powder into her eyes and allegedly snatched her mangalsutra before fleeing.
"During investigation, police found a clear similarity in the modus operandi in all three incidents. The accused allegedly conducted reconnaissance of the locations and surrounding areas several days before the incidents and observed the movement and routes used by the victims," she said.
Revealing his modus operandi she said he would wait for an opportunity when a woman was alone on a relatively deserted pathway before throwing chilli powder into her eyes, rendering her temporarily helpless, and fleeing after snatching her gold ornaments.
"Investigators also found that the accused allegedly took precautions to conceal his identity and avoid detection by selecting isolated locations away from CCTV surveillance. Despite this, police said technical evidence and human intelligence helped establish his identity," she said, adding that the Kumarasain police linked the three incidents through analysis of their similar modus operandi and technical evidence.
"Based on technical inputs and human intelligence, the accused was identified as Jail Singh.
Police traced his location to Nurpur and coordinated with the local police to take him into custody on October 5. He was subsequently brought to Kumarasain police station, where the three complainants/victims identified him," she said.
The accused also has a previous criminal case registered against him at Sihunta police station in Chamba district.
An FIR was registered there on March 5, in connection with an alleged snatching incident.
Police said the coordinated action had helped them trace the suspect allegedly involved in all three incidents.
The accused will be produced before a court, while further investigation is underway.
