Panchkula, Oct 18 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy to very heavy showers in Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while forecasting widespread rainfall across several southern states until October 24.
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh are expected to remain dry during the next seven days.
In its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 8.08 am, the IMD said coastal Andhra Pradesh was likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy falls, on October 18.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall was also forecast at isolated places in Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while Kerala and Mahe could receive heavy showers.
The department forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during October 18–23.
According to the day-wise forecast, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 20, followed by heavy rainfall at isolated places through October 24.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast over Kerala and Mahe and south interior Karnataka throughout October 18–24, Lakshadweep from October 20–24 and coastal Karnataka during October 20–22.
The IMD said an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coasts extended up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Another cyclonic circulation over the southwest Arabian Sea, also extending up to 5.8 km, is likely to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area around October 19.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on October 18. Winds could gust up to 60 kmph in parts of southern India.
The department also forecast thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph over parts of interior Karnataka and Telangana during the coming days.
Squally weather, with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph, is expected along and off the Karnataka and Kerala coasts and over the Lakshadweep area on October 18. The IMD's general fishermen's warning covers October 18 and 19.
The department warned that intense rainfall and strong winds could cause waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, localised landslides, damage to standing crops and vulnerable structures, and disruption of road and rail traffic.
Meanwhile, Chennai Nungambakkam observatory recorded 16 cm of rainfall between 8.30 am on October 17 and 5.30 am on October 18, while Adiramapatinam in Tamil Nadu receives 4 cm.
The IMD advised people in vulnerable areas to monitor weather warnings, avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and take precautions against lightning and flooding.
