Monsoon withdrawal line reaches Chandigarh; fresh western disturbance to bring rain to northwest India

Panchkula, Sep 25 (UNI) The southwest monsoon withdrawal line has reached Chandigarh, but a fresh western disturbance is expected to bring another spell of rain and thunderstorms to parts of northwest India over the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
The withdrawal line currently passes through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya, the IMD said in its morning weather bulletin issued at 9:05 a.m.
A fresh western disturbance is present as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies, while another western disturbance has merged with the system, the weather office said.
The IMD forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Uttarakhand from September 26 to 28, Himachal Pradesh during September 27-28 and Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh during September 28-30.
Isolated to scattered rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over the remaining parts of northwest India.
It warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand on September 26, while isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on September 27.
Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh on September 26 and 28, Uttarakhand on September 25 and 28, West Uttar Pradesh during September 25-27 and East Uttar Pradesh on September 25 and 27.
For Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, the IMD's seven-day rainfall distribution forecast shows isolated rain on September 25, scattered rain from September 26 to 29 and isolated rain on September 30 and October 1.
In Punjab, isolated rain is forecast for September 25, scattered rainfall on September 26 and 27 and isolated rainfall from September 28 to October 1.
Rain had already occurred at many places over Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh during the period from 8:30 a.m. on Thursday to 5:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the bulletin.
Meanwhile, the deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh weakened into a depression and was centred at 5:30 a.m. on Friday over south interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh, close to Nuapada.
The system is likely to move north-northwestwards, maintain its intensity as a depression for about 12 hours and subsequently weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area, the IMD said.
The weather office has cautioned that intense rainfall in vulnerable areas could lead to waterlogging, localised flooding and landslides and could affect road and rail traffic. UNI KK NST SAS
