Fresh weather system in Bay of Bengal likely to intensify into depression, IMD warns of very heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) A fresh weather system over the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast by November 2, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across parts of southern India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.
In its latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin, issued at 9.01 a.m., the IMD forecast isolated very heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 2 and 3, warning that adverse weather conditions could disrupt transport, damage crops and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The department said a low-pressure area that had formed over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining regions had moved west-northwestwards and intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea.
The system was located over the region at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday, with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.
"It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the same region during next 12 hours," the IMD said.
The weather system is subsequently expected to intensify further and reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the evening of November 2.
The IMD has not indicated in the morning bulletin that the developing system has already become a cyclonic storm or specified a landfall location.
According to the forecast, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 1 and 4, while rainfall intensity could increase significantly on November 2 and 3.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph are likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during November 2-3. Strong surface winds are also forecast over these regions from October 31 to November 3.
The approaching system is expected to influence weather conditions across several southern states, with heavy rainfall forecast over parts of Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka during the first week of November.
The weather department predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Telangana on November 1 and 2, Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during November 2-3.
Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall from November 1 to 3, while fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely on November 1 and 2 and again on November 5.
In Karnataka, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over coastal districts from November 3 to 5, north interior Karnataka on November 3 and 4, and south interior Karnataka from November 2 to 5.
The IMD's day-wise warnings also indicate heavy rainfall at isolated places over south interior Karnataka on November 6.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may affect Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh during the coming days.
Winds reaching 30-40 kmph and gusting to 50 kmph are also likely over Kerala and parts of interior Karnataka during November 1-3.
The department said the developing weather system could lead to damage to plantations, horticultural crops and standing agricultural produce, particularly in areas experiencing heavy rain and strong winds.
Small trees, including banana and papaya plants, could be uprooted, while vulnerable structures, huts and kutcha houses may suffer damage.
Heavy rainfall could also cause localised flooding, inundation, waterlogging and reduced visibility, affecting road and rail transport.
The department advised people in vulnerable areas to closely monitor weather conditions, avoid sheltering beneath trees during lightning and remain prepared to move to safer locations if necessary.
The IMD issued warnings for fishermen operating in the Andaman Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal, where squally weather is likely as the system intensifies.
Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are expected over parts of the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on October 31.
On November 1, winds may reach 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, over parts of the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal.
Similar squally conditions are expected over parts of the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2 and along and off the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3.
The department forecast squally weather with winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, along and off the Andhra Pradesh coast until November 4.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the affected sea areas during the warning period.
No fishermen warning was issued for the Arabian Sea.
Remnants of cyclonic storm Arnab continue to influence weather
Meanwhile, the IMD said the remnants of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab continued to persist as a low-pressure area over parts of central and northern India.
The system, which was earlier positioned over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining east Madhya Pradesh, southeast Uttar Pradesh and west Jharkhand, had moved over southeast Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring areas by 5.30 a.m. on Saturday.
The associated cyclonic circulation extended up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.
The department forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Chhattisgarh on October 31 and November 2-3, with isolated heavy rainfall likely on November 2.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are also expected over Chhattisgarh on November 2.

In eastern India, rainfall is expected over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha during different periods over the coming days.
The IMD said rainfall was recorded at most places over several parts of eastern and northern India during the observation period from 8.30 a.m. on October 30 to 5.30 a.m. on October 31.
Among significant rainfall observations, Balasore in Odisha, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and Tuni in coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded 5 cm each.

The department reported that Rajkot in Gujarat recorded the country's highest maximum temperature of 37.9 degrees Celsius, while Una in Himachal Pradesh registered the lowest minimum temperature of 11.6 degrees Celsius reported over the plains of India.
The IMD advised farmers in areas likely to receive heavy rainfall to ensure proper drainage in fields, protect harvested produce and provide support to vulnerable horticultural crops.
Livestock owners were also advised to keep animals under shelter during heavy rainfall and protect feed and fodder from moisture.
In northwestern India, the IMD forecast isolated to scattered rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on November 2, although no heavy rainfall, thunderstorm or other severe weather warning has been issued for the region during the seven-day forecast period.
The department's seven-day rainfall outlook indicates dry weather over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on October 31 and November 1, followed by scattered rainfall on November 2. Dry conditions are expected to return from November 3 to 6.
Punjab, meanwhile, is expected to experience dry weather throughout the seven-day period from October 31 to November 6, with no significant rainfall or severe weather warning indicated in the bulletin.
