Southwest monsoon batters Himachal, flights hit, roads blocked

Shimla, June 21 (UNI) The southwest monsoon system has become active across most of Himachal Pradesh, triggering moderate to heavy rain, flight disruptions, landslides, and a sharp dip in temperatures.
Low-lying clouds and thick fog have drastically reduced visibility across hill towns and airports.
Flights to the state’s key airports, including Shimla's Jubberhatti, remained suspended for the third consecutive day. “Visibility has been extremely low due to dense cloud cover and monsoon activity,” an official at Shimla Airport confirmed. The disruptions have left several passengers stranded and impacted connectivity to the state.
Landslides have been reported in Dharamshala, Shimla, and surrounding areas, with rainwater overflowing onto roads, making travel difficult. In a major setback, the water supply scheme catering to Shimla Airport is non-functional due to the rising silt level and damage to diversion pipes caused by the rains.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Kangra received the highest rainfall at 87.8 mm, followed by Nagrota Suriyan (56.4 mm), Jogindernagar (54 mm), and Palampur (23 mm). Shimla received 12.4 mm, categorized as light to moderate rainfall.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for widespread rain and heavy to very heavy downpour at isolated places in the coming days. Temperatures have plunged sharply due to the advancing monsoon, with maximum temperatures in places like Kangra dropping by over 12°C below normal. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Una at 33.6°C, while the lowest minimum was in Kukumseri at 11.8°C.
The state administration has urged travelers to exercise caution, avoid landslide-prone zones, and check weather advisories before planning travel to the region. With heavy rain forecast to continue, the next few days may see further disruptions in transport and essential services.
