Casual labourers, daily wagers stage protest in Srinagar, give ultimatum till October 10

Srinagar, Sep 28 (UNI) Casual labourers and daily wagers on Monday staged a protest in Srinagar under the banner of the Jammu and Kashmir Casual Labourers’ Forum, demanding immediate action on the government’s assurances regarding their regularisation.
Addressing the protesters, employee leader Sajad Ahmad Parray said the government had constituted a committee to examine the regularisation of daily wagers and casual labourers, but its report had not yet been made public.
He alleged that the government was going back on assurances given to workers, particularly after the Chief Minister stated that no fixed timeframe or date could be given for their regularisation.
“We have decided to protest against this injustice. All workers will continue to raise their voice under the banner of the Jammu and Kashmir Casual Labourers’ Forum,” Parrey said.
He expressed gratitude to trade union leaders, political representatives, MLAs, civil society members and senior citizens for extending support to the workers’ cause.
Parray said the protesters had conveyed to the government that they would announce their next programme after October 10, giving the administration an opportunity to resolve the matter before then.
“If the government comes forward with a concrete decision, makes the committee report public and approves it, the matter can be resolved. Otherwise, a bigger protest programme will be announced on October 10,” he said.
He held the government responsible for the situation if the issue remained unresolved and said the workers would continue to press for a solution.
The protesters demanded that the government fulfil its commitments and provide a clear roadmap for the regularisation of daily wagers and casual labourers.
Earlier the day Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the committee constituted to examine the regularisation of daily-wage workers has not yet submitted its report.
He questioned the delay, saying that had Jammu and Kashmir remained a state, the preparation of such a report might not have taken more than a few months.
“If we were a state, do you think it would take more than a year to prepare such a report? It would have taken six months, perhaps four months. But they have not been able to complete it,” he said.
