Tackle El Nino impact efficiently, check rise of rice prices: AP CM tells officials

Vijayawada, Sep 20 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today directed officials to take steps to tackle the El Nino impact, utilize funds to save horticulture crops.and implement contingency plans efficiently for which Rs 60 crore was earmarked.

Presiding over a meeting with the district collectors and other officials here, the Chief Minister reviewed the El Nino impact and the implementation of action to tackle the situation. He told the officials to take the El Nino as a challenge and tackle the situation efficiently.

He directed officials to prioritize protecting the interests of farmers by reducing crop loss due to continued dry spell. He also told them to regulate the rise in prices of onion, palm oil and red gram. “High risk horticulture crops should be protected by utilizing the funds released for the purpose. Farmers should be motivated to raise demand based crops. The action plan should be implemented to mitigate the El Nino impact,” he ordered the officials.

The El Nino impact is not only affecting the farmers but also various sectors, he said adding that steps should be taken to ensure that the farmers get crop loss insurance, in case of crop damage. He expressed displeasure over the spiraling prices of rice and instructed the officials to examine the rice stocks in godowns.

The Chief Minister further said that the government is purchasing onions from various markets to regulate the prices, asking the officials to encourage the farmers to raise onion crops in a big way. He told the officials to coordinate with the Central government as it is extending Minimum Support Price to some crops.

Referring to recent rainfall in some districts, the Chief Minister suggested that the rainwater should be utilized properly and underlined the need of giving priority to natural farming. Naidu highlighted that the government had released Rs 190 crore to protect the horticulture crops and asked them to utilize the funds for the purpose. He also stressed the need of providing drinking water to everyone.

The Chief Minister pointed out that there is a 50.7 per cent rainfall deficit in the state and the highest rainfall deficit was recorded in Prakasam, Annamayya and Sri Satya Sai districts.
