AP: Cocoa farmers will get Rs 500 per kg for their produce: Minister

Eluru, May 23 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture K Atchannaidu has announced that the cocoa produce will be purchased from the farmers at Rs 500 per kg, stating the government is contemplating to enact a law to provide remunerative prices for cocoa produce on par with the international market.

Informing this at a press conference here on Friday, flanked by Housing and I&PR Minister K Parthasarathy, Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu stated that a meeting was held with the company owners, traders and farmers and discussed the issue of purchasing cocoa produce from the farmers.

“The traders and company owners were convinced to purchase cocoa produce from the farmers at Rs 450 per kg and the Government will pay Rs 50. The traders and companies owners were asked to purchase entire cocoa produce from the farmers during the season,” the Agriculture Minister asserted.

He revealed that the chocolate production at the international market plummeted which led to declining cocoa produce. The Government is contemplating to enact a law to provide remunerative prices for cocoa farmers, Atchannaidu mentioned.
The Minister also assured of imparting the farmers training on producing quality cocoa. He advised the farmers to raise cocoa as intercrop so that they could reap additional benefits.

The Agriculture Minister also promised to resolve the tobacco farmers’ problems of remunerative price for the tobacco produce, stating that a meeting would be convened with the tobacco farmers and tobacco board officials to resolve the issue. He advised the tobacco farmers to raise their crop depending on the demand in the market. The Minister asked farmers not to take extreme steps when the prices crumbled as the government would extend all help to them.

Minister Atchannaidu highlighted that the government had set up a price stabilisation fund with a corpus fund of Rs 140 crore of which Rs 80 crore had already been spent. The previous YSRCP government announced the setting up of a price stabilisation fund by allocating Rs 3000 crore but did not spend even a single rupee.

Special Chief Secretary of Agriculture department B Rajasekhar, Horticulture Commissioner K Srinivas, district Collector K VetriSelvi and MLAs Badeti Radhakrishnaiah and S Roshan Kumar were present.
