Telangana CM Reddy seeks Centre's support to tackle El Niño impact

Hyderabad, Sep 18 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday met union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Madhapur here and sought the Centre's support to address the impact of El Niño conditions on the State's agriculture sector.
The Chief Minister thanked the union Minister for allocating two lakh houses to Telangana in the first phase under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
He recalled that he had submitted a representation to the union Minister in Delhi in July, seeking sanction of houses for 11,56,915 eligible rural families. Mr Revanth Reddy requested the Centre to allocate the remaining 9.56 lakh houses in accordance with the State's demand.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister briefed Mr Chouhan on the impact of El Niño conditions in Telangana and said electricity consumption in the agricultural sector had increased due to deficient rainfall.
He said the State government had prepared advance plans to prevent shortages of drinking water and electricity and sought necessary support from the Centre to address challenges arising from El Niño.
Mr Revanth Reddy said Telangana was supplying fine rice to the poor through ration shops, describing it as a unique initiative in the country. He also said farmers were being encouraged to cultivate fine-variety paddy by providing a bonus of Rs 500 per quintal.
The Chief Minister said farmers were being encouraged to adopt alternative crops in view of the prevailing climatic conditions. He also informed the union Minister about the proposed establishment of a 250-acre fruit and vegetable market with international-standard facilities.
He sought the Centre's cooperation in encouraging farmers to adopt crop diversification..
Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Tummala Nageswara Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju and senior officials were present at the meeting, according to an official statement.
