Telangana Assembly seeks Centre’s aid to tackle rainfall deficit

Hyderabad, Sep 18 (UNI) The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously adopted draft resolutions urging the union Government to provide immediate financial and other assistance to the state to address the prevailing rainfall-deficit conditions and undertake relief and mitigation measures.
The resolutions, moved by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, sought an early Central team visit to Telangana to assess the El Niño situation at the field level and adequate assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), besides immediate release of the Centre’s share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
The Assembly also sought assistance for crop loss, input subsidy, drinking water, fodder, livestock protection, groundwater recharge and revival of tanks and other water resources. It urged relaxation of relevant guidelines wherever necessary to facilitate relief.
The resolutions sought an additional 50 days of employment under the VB-G RAM G scheme over and above the existing 125 days, with the entire expenditure borne by the Centre. They also called for relaxation of the seasonal suspension period, enhancement of the labour budget, timely allocation of fertilisers and advance supply to affected districts.
The House further sought increased allocations under Per drop More Crop and MIDH, subsidised seeds for alternative crops, and an additional 1,500 MW of power from the unallocated quota of Central generating stations. It also sought a five-million-tonne coal linkage, more railway rakes for power plants and relaxation of transmission charges.
The resolutions urged the Centre to sanction a special assistance package of Rs 20,000 crore for drinking and irrigation water requirements and drought mitigation, besides financial support for rejuvenating water resources and completing ongoing irrigation projects.
The Assembly also sought an increase in the FRBM borrowing limit from three to 3.5 per cent of GSDP for 2026-27 to enable the state to meet additional relief expenditure, along with enhanced assistance under Central and Centrally Sponsored Schemes for vulnerable farmers and families.
