Ailing elephant calf Maya airlifted from Kodanad to Vantara for specialised treatment

Kochi, Nov 6 (UNI) Maya, an ailing elephant calf from Kodanad Abhayaranyam in Kerala, was airlifted to Vantara Animal Rescue Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Friday for specialised medical evaluation and treatment.
The calf was transported on a chartered aircraft that took off from Cochin International Airport (CIAL) at 1.30 pm, with Vantara sponsoring the entire air transfer as part of efforts to provide her with advanced medical care.
Maya, who is suffering from a genetic medical condition, had earlier been recommended for euthanasia. However, following a request from Vantara, the calf was handed over to its animal rescue centre for further medical assessment and possible specialised treatment.
CIAL made elaborate arrangements at its Domestic Cargo Terminal to ensure the safe and smooth transfer of the elephant calf. Special facilities were put in place to accommodate the cage carrying Maya and facilitate its movement from the cargo terminal to the chartered aircraft.
The airport extended the necessary infrastructure, logistical assistance and operational support to facilitate the transfer. Veterinary examinations were also carried out before departure and during the journey to closely monitor the calf's health.
CIAL Airport Director Manu G and Cargo Head Satheesh J Pai supervised the arrangements at the terminal. Representatives of the Forest Department, Vantara and veterinary and support teams were present to coordinate the operation.
The transfer marks an effort to provide Maya with access to specialised veterinary care and further medical intervention, officials said.
