DMK, NTK candidates file nomiations, Left parties announce nominees for Madurantakam, Dharapuram bypoll seats

Chennai, Sep 15 (UNI) With just one day remaining for the filing of nominations, candidates of the principal Opposition DMK and Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) of actor-director Seeman filed their papers on Tuesday for the October six bypolls to Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly seats, even as the Left parties too entered the fray despite, supporting government, and announced its candidates for the two seats.
Former MLA and DMK candidate I.Paranthaman, accompanied by senior party leaders, filed his papers before the Returning Officer for the Madurantakam seat. He was followed by NTK nominee K.Janakiraman who too filed their papers.
For the Dharapuram seat, DMK nominee Suganya and NTK candidate M.Karthika filed their papers.
Though the ruling TVK and opposition AIADMK too have announced their candidates, they would be filing their papers for the two
seats tomorrow, the last date for filing of nomination, along with the candidates of the CPI and CPI-M, who despite extending outside support to the TVK government headed by Vijay, decided to enter the fray on its own by contesting in Dharapuram and Madurantakam respectively, making the bypolls a fve-cornered contest.
According to the Election Commission, so far 19 candidates, including eight women, have filed their nomination papers for the two
seats, with most of them being Independents.
Ten candidates--six men and four women-- have entered the fray in Madurantakam, while nine candidates--five men and four women--have filed their papers for the Dharapuram seat.
Meanwhile, the CPI and the CPI(M) announced their respective candidate and they would file their papers tomorrow. Addressing a joint press conference here this evening, CPI State Secretary M.Veerapandian and his CPI(M) counterpart P.Shanmugam said P.Lakshmanan would contest from Dharapuram and Ms.Suganthi from Madurantakam. Both the leaders exuded confidence that the people would suppprt them in the bypolls and ensure their victory.
Justifying their decision to contest the bypolls on their own, the two leaders said they were not part of any of the three fronts headed by the formidable TVK, which has Congress, VCK and IUML, the DMK-led SPA, which faced post-poll desertions and left with DMDK
as its lone ally, and the AIADMK-heading NDA that also has BJP, PMK and AMMK.
Shanmugam also categorically ruled out any threat to the stability of the Vijay government in view of the Left parties decision to contest the bypolls. "There is no threat to the government's stability. There will be no change in our committed stand on supporting the TVK government headed by Vijay". "We have already made it clear the reason (to prevent imposition of President's rule and also to prevent BJP from indirectly governing the state), while deciding to support the TVK to form the government--which had emerged as the single largest party and fell short of majority.
However, not supporting TVK does not mean that the left parties are supporting the DMK in the bypolls. It is wrong and not acceptable. We are not part of any of the three fronts--DMK- AIADMK and TVK. We have decided to contest, as this is neither a general election or intended for a regime change. It's a byelection and we (the CPI andCPI-M) have decided to contest it against all the three fronts.
