Lakshadweep/Kochi, Sep 30 (UNI) The Bharatiya Tatrakshak, in a joint operation with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Gujarat, has intercepted an Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea, west of Lakshadweep, and seized around 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine valued at over Rs 3,000 crore in the international market.
The operation was launched on September 25 based on actionable intelligence regarding the movement of a suspicious vessel in the maritime domain, a release said here today.
Bharatiya Tatrakshak deployed sea and air assets for surveillance and maintained continuous tracking of the vessel before launching a hot pursuit and boarding operation.
Five Pakistani nationals found operating the dhow were apprehended, while the vessel and the seized narcotics were brought to Mumbai under armed escort.
The crew, vessel and contraband have been handed over for joint interrogation and further legal proceedings involving the concerned agencies.
The operation marks a major seizure of narcotics in the maritime domain and comes amid intensified efforts by security and law-enforcement agencies to disrupt transnational drug-trafficking networks using sea routes.
The seizure also forms part of the ongoing efforts to prevent the smuggling of narcotic substances into the country and support the union Government's objective of a drug-free India.
