Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police arrest 2 in digital arrest fraud case

Hyderabad, Oct 18 (UNI) Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have arrested two people for allegedly facilitating a digital arrest fraud involving Rs 29.17 lakh by arranging mule bank accounts and routing the defrauded money through multiple accounts to conceal the money trail.
The accused, Mohd Ashfaq Hussain (27) and Ahmed Najeeb Uddin (27), both residents of Ameerpet, were apprehended on October 17. Another accused, Sachin of Bengaluru, is absconding.
According to a police release on Sunday, a 63-year-old retired employee was targeted in March 2025 by fraudsters impersonating officials of the Delhi Police, CBI and Enforcement Directorate. They allegedly threatened him with arrest in a money-laundering case and persuaded him and his daughter to transfer Rs 29,17,668 under the pretext of verification, promising a refund.
Investigations revealed that the arrested accused allegedly helped route the money through bank accounts and cash deposit machines before it was used to purchase USDT cryptocurrency. They reportedly received commissions for facilitating the transactions. Police seized two Apple iPhones from their possession and found that around 16 cases across India were linked to the alleged fraudulent activities.
The accused were produced before a court in Hyderabad. Further investigation is underway to trace the absconding accused and identify others involved in the fraud.
