Hyderabad, Cyberabad police book 209 drunk-driving cases

Hyderabad, Sep 20 (UNI) Hyderabad and Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 209 cases of drunk driving during special enforcement drives over the weekend as part of efforts to improve road safety, officials said on Sunday.
Hyderabad Traffic Police apprehended 129 motorists during a two-day drive on September 18 and 19. The offenders included 101 two-wheeler riders, 10 three-wheeler drivers and 18 people driving four-wheelers and other vehicles.
Of the total, 59 recorded BAC levels of 51-100 mg/100 ml, while three recorded levels above 300 mg/100 ml.
Cyberabad Traffic Police apprehended 80 offenders during its weekend drive, including 62 two-wheeler riders, two three-wheeler drivers and 16 four-wheeler drivers. Eight offenders recorded BAC levels between 301 and 550 mg/100 ml.
Cyberabad Police warned that drunken driving resulting in a fatal accident would attract charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, carrying up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.
Meanwhile, 142 drunken-driving cases were disposed of by courts in Cyberabad during September 14-19. Of these, 12 offenders received fine and jail, while 130 were fined. Police said the special drives would continue under a zero-tolerance policy and appealed to motorists to cooperate, according to separate police statements on Sunday.
