Hyd: Police seize two elephant tusks worth Rs 3 cr; one arrested

Hyderabad, June 25 (UNI) The Rachakonda Special Operations Team (SOT), along with Forest department officials, seized two tusks, worth Rs 3 crore in the International market and nabbed a 32-year-old driver on charges of illegally smuggling and attempting to sell elephant tusks at Hayathnagar, on the outskirts of the city, today.
Based on a tip-off, the SOT and Forest department officials apprehended Prasad at Hayathnagar, who along with his friend Lokeshwar Reddy reached LB Nagar from Tirupati in a private bus with the tusks concealed in their luggage, police said here.
The tusks were seized, and efforts are on to arrest Lokeshwar who managed to flee from the spot.
The arrested driver R Prasad from Annamaiah district of Andhra Pradesh, who was previously involved in a red sanders smuggling, was arrested by the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) in Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and jailed in February, police said here.
During his stay in Tirupati sub-jail, Prasad befriended Lokeshwar, also arrested in a red sanders smuggling case and lodged in the same jail.
After being released from prison, the duo plotted to sell elephant tusks and they went to the Seshachalam forest, where they procured two tusks from local Yanadula tribals to sell in Hyderabad, according to Rachakonda Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu.
