Two monitor lizards rescued from alleged wildlife traffickers in Telangana

Hyderabad, Nov 3 (UNI) Two monitor lizards allegedly being trafficked for meat were rescued by the Telangana Forest Department in Sangareddy district following a joint effort with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, the organisation said on Tuesday.
Acting on information provided by a traveller about an injured monitor lizard reportedly being sold for meat along the highway near Sadashivpet, PETA India alerted the Sangareddy Forest Division.
After several days of surveillance, forest officials apprehended two persons allegedly in possession of the reptiles and seized the two monitor lizards.
The Forest Division registered a Preliminary Offence Report (POR No. 1694/68) under various provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, including Sections 9, 11, 12, 38J, 39, 40, 50 and 51A.
Offences involving species protected under Schedule I of the Act are punishable with imprisonment ranging from three to seven years and a fine of at least Rs 25,000.
Such offences are cognisable and non-bailable.
PETA India Senior Cruelty Response Officer Sinchana Subramanyan commended the Sangareddy Forest Division, particularly Deputy Conservator of Forests M. Naveen Reddy, for the rescue and registration of the offence report.
Monitor lizards are hunted for meat and body parts, sometimes driven by false beliefs about their medicinal properties, PETA India said.
It advised the public not to harm or handle the reptiles if encountered and to contact the Forest Department for assistance.
