Fresh sexual harassment case surfaces involving ruling DMK functionary in TN

Chennai, May 22 (UNI) After the Anna University sexual assault case caused some embarrassment for the ruling DMK, a fresh case has surfaced, this time at Arakkonam in Ranipet district following a complaint filed by the victim, a college student, allegedly naming a DMK functionary.
The victim, a college student from Kavanur village, has named DMK functionary R Deivaseyal, since
removed from the post of DMK Youth Wing Deputy Organiser's post, accusing him of coercing her to marry him a couple of months back and exploiting her, with the promise of helping her in the divorce case filed by her against her first husband.
Deivasayal and his wife Kanimozhi, who was also said to be connected in the case and apprehended
arrest, secured an anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court in the case on Wednesday evening.
As the fresh sexual exploitation case issue created a furore and triggered strong condemnation from the Opposition parties, with the AIADMK staging a protest demonstration demanding a CBI probe and the arrest of all the culprits involved in it, the National Commission for Women (NCW) too has taken a very serious view of the incident.
The NCW, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, issued a directive to the Tamil Nadu DGP to submit a detailed action taken report, along with the FIR copies, in three days.
The NCW said considering the grave nature of the charges and the political affiliation of the accused, it directed the DGP calling for an immediate, impartial and transparent investigations into the case, besides constituting and Independent Investigation team, prevent any political interference and take prompt actions under the relevant provisions of BNS, 2023.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan alleged that the Tamil Nadu police were attempting to cover up the Arakkonam case involving a DMK functionary.
He also pointed out that the NCW had taken suo motu cognisance, seeking a detailed action-taken report.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme here, Mr. Murugan said in both the Anna University sexual assault case and
the Arakkonam case, DMK functionaries were involved.
"There were a few more people linked to the Arakkonam case, but the State police is attempting to cover it up”, Mr Murugan claimed.
