Vellore DMK councillor arrested for remarks against Vijay linked to Karur stampede

Chennai, Oct 28 (UNI) Vellore DMK Councillor Teeta Saravanan, who was absconding after allegedly making remarks that "we should have finished him in Karur itself", about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay linking to the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, was arrested in Villupuram district on Wednesday.
Saravanan had stoked a political row with this remarks made outside the Puzhal Central prison near here when arrested former DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was escorted after judicial remand in the Rs.100 crore private school recognition graft case in the intervening hours of Monday and Tuesday.
Protesting against the Anbil's arrest, Saravanan was seen telling the ex-Minister that "Had we finished him (Vijay) at Karur itself, this situation (Anbil arrest) would not have arisen" and this went viral in the social media and was widely telecast in all private TV news channels.
Acting on a complaint, police registered a case against him under four sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and formed special teams to nab him. Based on intelligence inputs, police traced him to Villupuram, where he had allegedly taken shelter after informing his friends that he was heading to Bengaluru.
Following his arrest today morning, he was being brought to Chennai for further investigation.
Following a complaint, Puzhal police registered a case against Saravanan under four sections, including provisions relating to intimidation and disturbing public peace. Three special teams have been formed to trace him.
Reacting to this, Minister for Electricity, Law and Prisons CTR.Nirmal Kumar sought to know what conspiracy was hatched during the Karur incident by former Ministers V.Senthil Balaji and Anbil Mahesh. Senthilbalaji, who was embroiled in the multi-crore TASMAC scam after the ruling TVK unearthed massive irregularities in the name of Party Funds (an euphemism coined by the government for corruption), was a native of Karur district and was a DMK strongman, while Anbil hailed from the adjoining native Trichy district.
After the Karur stampede, Senthilbalaji who had contested the earlier Assembly polls from his home turf, this time shifted to Coimbatore South and got elected, while Anbil Mahesh lost the April elections from Tiruverumbur seat in Trichy district.
The controversy comes amid escalating tensions between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the DMK following Anbil Mahesh’s arrest, the first ex-Minister to go behind the bars in a graft case after the TVK government, which stormed to power under the plank of eradicating corruption, started digging into the alleged corruption that took place during the previous DMK regime.
