AP CM conducts aerial survey on cyclone hit areas

Vijayawada, Nov 4 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey in the cyclone Marusu affected Guntur, Bapatla and Prakasam districts.
Later the Chief Minister held a review meeting at the Secretariat. The officials informed him that heavy rains continue to lash tribal areas of Eluru district, including Buttayagudem, Velerupadu, Polavaram, Jeelugumilli and Koyyalagudem.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), which visited the state to assess the drought situation, met the Chief Minister on Wednesday. The members of the team, who toured Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai districts in two groups, briefed the Chief Minister on their drought assessments.
The Chief Minister said that a freak situation prevailed in AP as coastal districts were facing cyclones, while the Rayalaseema region was reeling under severe drought due to deficient rainfall and the impact of El Niño.
Naidu informed the members that the state had received significantly below-normal rainfall this year, resulting in severe damage to Kharif crops due to prolonged dry spells.
He explained to the Central team that Anantapur recorded the second-lowest rainfall in the country. “The state has declared 388 mandals across 21 districts as drought-affected and has already submitted a report seeking Central assistance after assessing the losses suffered by farmers, Naidu told the team.
Naidu said the state would submit a detailed report on the drought situation to the Centre within a week and urged the Central team to examine the issuance of dry ration cards to eligible drought-affected families under the present circumstances. This would facilitate the supply of essential commodities at subsidized prices with Central assistance, he noted.
The Chief Minister asserted the state government was taking steps to provide crop insurance compensation and input subsidies to farmers who had suffered crop losses due to drought. However, he urged the Centre to intervene to ensure that crop insurance claims were settled without delay and compensation was credited to farmers' bank accounts at the earliest.
Naidu also apprised the Central team that while several parts of the state were facing severe drought, coastal Andhra districts had suffered damage to crops due to cyclones.
He appealed to the Central Government to respond to the state's situation "with special consideration" and extend appropriate assistance to address the impact of these multiple natural calamities.
