Cabinet clears two-year extension, regular absorption route for Agniveers

Bengaluru/New Delhi, Nov 4 (UNI) The union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an additional two-year engagement period for 75 per cent of Agniveers, paving the way for their eventual absorption as regular soldiers in the Defence Forces, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of selection criteria.
Under the revised arrangement, 25 per cent of Agniveers will continue to be offered regular employment based on merit, as originally envisaged under the Agnipath scheme. The remaining 75 per cent will be given the option of serving for another two years, following which they will be offered enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to meeting the prescribed selection criteria.
The decision follows a four-year assessment of the Agnipath scheme and feedback from the three Defence Forces, which reportedly found Agniveers to have performed well in terms of skills, motivation, physical fitness and technological adaptability.
The additional engagement period for the remaining Agniveers has been approved on the recommendations of the Defence Forces, with the stated objective of balancing their career aspirations with organisational requirements and operational efficiency.
The second engagement period will carry higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits, according to the Defence Ministry.
Highlighting the achievements of the Agnipath scheme, the government said it had expanded the geographical footprint of recruitment across districts, standardised and made the selection process more transparent, and improved physical fitness, morale, discipline and competitive spirit among recruits.
The scheme has also enhanced technological adaptability and educational opportunities within the services, besides opening up various branches of the Defence Forces for women.
With the additional two-year engagement followed by the proposed enrolment process, the Cabinet has created a further pathway for Agniveers to enter regular service, while retaining the existing merit-based selection framework.
The Agnipath scheme will continue, the Ministry said.
