JIPMER successfully treats 6 month AP girl infant with brain tumour through Stem Cell transplant

Chennai, Nov 4 (UNI) The Centrally-administered JIPMER in Puducherry has successully treated a six-month-old girl infant from Andhra Pradesh with brain tumour through stem cell transplant.
A girl child from East Godavari district in AP was referred to the JIPMER in early 2025 for specialised treatment of medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumour.
The child underwent successful surgery, with the neurosurgeons achieving complete removal of the tumour, supported by the Neuro-anaesthesia team. Her subsequent treatment involved coordinated multidisciplinary care from specialists in Paediatric and Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Paediatrics, Neuroradiologist, Neuropathologist, Pediatric
Surgeon and Transfusion Medicine.
Radiation therapy is an important component of treatment for medulloblastoma. However, in very young children, radiation to the developing brain can cause significant long-term complications, including neurocognitive and developmental impairment. Considering the child's extremely young age, the treating team adopted a treatment strategy aimed at avoiding radiation therapy. She received
chemotherapy over the following 12 months as part of this approach.
Following detailed multidisciplinary discussions and consultations with international experts, the paediatric and medical oncology teams decided to proceed with an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation as part of the treatment. This highly specialised approach was chosen to strengthen disease control while avoiding radiation therapy and its potential long-term effects on the developing brain. Such treatment in infants requires considerable clinical expertise, careful planning and coordinated support from multiple departments.
The autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation was successfully performed at JIPMER on September 20 this year. Following recovery, the child was discharged from the hospital and returned to her hometown last week. At the time of discharge, there was no evidence of disease.
A significant aspect of this achievement is that the child's treatment, spanning more than a year and involving neurosurgery, chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation, was provided entirely free of cost to the family. This was made possible through financial assistance from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, union Government and support from various NGOs dedicated to helping children with cancer.
This achievement highlights JIPMER's expertise in managing complex childhood cancers through specialised multidisciplinary care. JIPMER is among the few government hospitals in the country to have performed an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for medulloblastoma in an infant, reflecting its capacity to deliver highly specialised treatment for children with cancer.
Brain tumours in children present unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in infants, in whom the potential long-term effects of therapy must be carefully balanced against the need for effective disease control. Although many paediatric brain tumours are potentially curable, outcomes in developing countries remain suboptimal due to delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation, as well as limited access to specialised expertise and care.
