ISRO Chief attends SRIHER Graduation Day, present degree certificates

Chennai, Oct 24 (UNI) The Graduation day of Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) was held at its campus on Saturday.
Chief guest Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO presented degree certificates to 455 students in the faculties of nursing, clinical research, biomedical sciences and technology, audiology and speech language pathology, occupational therapy and behavioural and social sciences.
In his graduation address, he lauded the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for its remarkable achievements and contributions to India's space programme. He said that India currently accounts for approximately 2% of the global space economy and has set a target of increasing this share to 10%.
Talking about the Gaganyaan programme, he said several critical safety and crew-escape tests have been successfully conducted towards India's human spaceflight mission. The combined efforts of the government, ISRO and private industry are expected to create the manufacturing capacity required to support the target of 50 launches annually within the next three years. The initiative will focus on expanding launch infrastructure, enhancing rocket manufacturing capacity, and supporting Indian private companies and startups to strengthen the country's space ecosystem.
Speaking about India's future launch capacity, the DoS Secretary highlighted the growing demand for space-based services and satellite launches. India currently operates two launch pads at Sriharikota. The development of additional launch infrastructure, including the proposed launch facility at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu, is expected to support the expansion of launch operations and increase the country's annual launch capacity.
Addressing concerns regarding the involvement of private companies in space activities, Naraynan clarified that the proposed changes should not be interpreted as the privatization of ISRO. ISRO will continue to function as a department of the Government of India. The government will retain its institutional role in the national space programme.
Chancellor V.R. Venkataachalam, Pro-Chancellor R.V. Sengutuvan, Registrar Dr. S. Senthil Kumar, Dean, Medical College Dr. K. Balaji Singh, Controller of Examinations Dr. R. Padmavathi, Dean, Research Dr. P. Venkatachalam, Director, Finance & Accounts J. Ravisankar and other Heads of Departments participated in the event.
