Language-based alienation, artistic freedom discussed at IDSFFK

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 27 (UNI) Language-based discrimination, identity crisis and concerns over freedom of artistic expression came under discussion at an interactive ‘Meet the Directors’ session held as part of the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) here.
The session at Kairali Portico brought together directors of 13 films screened in different categories, including campus films and long documentaries, providing a platform to discuss the social, political and ethical dimensions of documentary filmmaking.
Director Aayush Singh, whose film Mother Tongue explores linguistic discrimination faced by non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai, spoke about his personal experiences of language-based alienation. He said language should function as a bridge that connects people rather than becoming a means of division.
The discussion also turned to the current political climate and concerns over artistic freedom, with filmmakers highlighting the difficulties faced by those who question state authorities through their work.
Director Kamal K M called upon the audience and fellow filmmakers to express solidarity with seven filmmakers whose works, he said, had been denied permission for screening by the Central Government.
The filmmakers also discussed the ethical and political responsibilities involved in documenting communities and individuals. The challenges of representing tribal communities, linguistic identities and private lives were examined in the context of sensitivity, consent, access and the filmmaker's responsibility towards the subjects.
The session was moderated by Dr Rajesh James.

(Mudiyettu), Kamal K M (The Making of Political Ubu), Darwin Annakumar (Maram Maramkothi), Cyril Syriac (Like the Birds), Aravind Roy (Heart Attack), Kalpajyoti Bhuyan (Dreams of a Forgotten Past), Tashmin Majumdar (Bird’s Nest in Storm), Mansingh Baskey (Sacred Sal Tree), Shayar Gandhi (Caress Me), Prachi Chowghule (An Oyster Life), Kalyani B. (Mirage), Aayush Singh (Mother Tongue) and Rithwik Deepa (The Shadow of Time).
