Kerala rolls out 335 ambulances, targets 10-minute emergency response

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 (UNI) Kerala is gearing up to ensure that ambulances reach patients within 10 minutes of receiving an emergency call, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said as he flagged off 335 ambulances for deployment across the state.
The new ambulances include 16 advanced life support vehicles equipped with ventilators, 315 basic life support vehicles and ambulances fitted with neonatal care facilities. The fleet is intended to strengthen emergency response and provide medical assistance suited to patients' needs.
The initiative is expected to set a national benchmark in emergency medical response, he said.
Muraleedharan said the government was committed to strengthening public healthcare while ensuring that financial constraints did not affect services. Affordable, quality medicines were being made available through government institutions, he said.
The minister also announced plans to extend 24-hour specialist services across the state, following the success of the 'Pratheeksha Kendram' launched in Punalur. The expansion would require additional posts for doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and other staff. A proposal seeking the creation of these posts had been submitted to the Finance Department, and the scheme would be implemented in phases.
Claiming that the practice of patients being made to lie on the floors of medical college hospitals had ended since the present government assumed office, Muraleedharan said the government would take action on shortcomings in the health sector without favouritism. He also assured doctors continuing in government service of the government's support.
