Kerala Health Department brings out first infectious disease calendar

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 23 (UNI) The Kerala Health Department has brought out an infectious disease calendar for the first time, with the objective of preventing disease outbreaks, reducing transmission and avoiding deaths.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan released the calendar at the Government Secretariat here today.
The minister said effective prevention and treatment of infectious diseases required coordinated efforts by the Health Department, other concerned government departments and the public. The calendar is an initiative to strengthen this coordination and ensure that preventive measures are taken at the appropriate time.
The calendar will be distributed across the State and made available on the Health Department’s website.
Although scientific knowledge provides a clear understanding of the trends in the spread of various diseases, this information is not widely available to the public. The resulting lack of awareness could affect community preparedness and weaken efforts to prevent infections, the minister said.
The calendar provides month-wise details of diseases relevant to Kerala, along with information on their symptoms, modes of transmission and the precautions to be taken by individuals and communities. It is intended to improve public awareness, promote effective preventive practices and encourage people to seek medical care without delay when symptoms develop.
The Health Department has a key responsibility in preventing the spread of diseases and the deaths associated with them. By making information on disease patterns and preventive measures accessible to the public, the calendar seeks to strengthen preparedness and enable timely intervention.
The calendar was prepared by health experts in Kerala under the supervision of the high-power advisory committee appointed by the Health Department. Based on the scientific information currently available, it will be revised as and when new scientific evidence becomes available, the minister said.
S.S. Lal, chairperson of the Health Department’s high-power committee, Principal Secretary Sharmila Mary Joseph and other officials attended the release.
