Telangana Governor inaugurates breast cancer awareness program in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, June 22 (UNI) Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Sunday inaugurated a large-scale Breast Cancer awareness programme titled “ABCs of Breast Cancer – What Every Woman Must Know” at Shanti Sarovar, the Brahma Kumaris Headquarters here.
The event witnessed participation from over 500 attendees, including survivors, healthcare professionals, and the general public.
The Governor paid rich tributes to renowned breast cancer surgeon and advocate Dr P Raghu Ram, lauding his tireless efforts spanning 18 years in creating awareness about the importance of early detection.

“I deeply appreciate Dr Raghu Ram’s commitment to this cause, including the remarkable feat of securing two Guinness World Records earlier this year for conducting the largest breast cancer awareness lesson, both onsite and online, at the Brahma Kumaris World Headquarters in Mount Abu,” he said.
Highlighting Dr Raghu Ram’s continued efforts, the Governor added, “Illuminating the Telangana Raj Bhavan in pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for five consecutive years—even during the peak of COVID—is a powerful symbol of his passion. His pioneering initiatives have truly transformed breast cancer care in India.”
Delivering the core awareness session, Dr P Raghu Ram, Founding Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for breast diseases and Chairman of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, stressed the alarming statistics of breast cancer in India—200,000 new cases and 100,000 deaths annually.

“A woman is diagnosed every 4 minutes and one succumbs every 8 minutes,” he said and urged early detection through breast awareness and annual mammograms for women over 40.
He encouraged men to prioritise women's health in their families, saying, “Alongside or in place of a saree during festivals, consider gifting an annual screening mammogram to your loved ones. That gesture could save a life.”
BK Kuldeep Didi, Hyderabad Region In-Charge of Brahma Kumaris and a breast cancer “conqueror,” shared her moving personal journey of overcoming the disease.
She credited Dr Raghu Ram for the empathetic and expert care she received.
“Thanks to his constant encouragement and expert treatment, I emerged not just as a survivor but a conqueror. His efforts have inspired many to face this challenge with courage,” she said.
