Karnataka sugarcane farmers call off stir

Belagavi, Nov 6 (UNI) Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka have called off their prolonged agitation following an agreement with sugar factories to pay Rs 3,600 per tonne for sugarcane, bringing an end to the standoff that had disrupted crushing operations and triggered protests across the region.
The decision came after negotiations between farmer representatives, sugar factory managements and the state government, with the revised price emerging as the key point of settlement.
Sugar mills are expected to resume crushing operations from November 6, providing relief to farmers who had been waiting for the season's procurement to begin.
The agitation had intensified in Belagavi, where farmers launched a series of protests, including a Jail Bharo agitation. Several protesters were taken into preventive custody as the movement gathered momentum.
Farmer leaders said the settlement addressed their immediate demand for a higher sugarcane procurement price. Under the arrangement, farmers will also receive 75 per cent of additional proceeds arising from any increase in sugar prices, while sugar factories will retain the remaining 25 per cent.
However, the withdrawal of the agitation does not mean that all the farmers' demands have been settled. They have continued to press for an additional Rs 1,000 per tonne from the state government and a revision of the Centre's minimum selling price of sugar.
Farmer leader Chunappa Pujeri has indicated that the agitation could be revived if the outstanding demands are not addressed. Farmers have reportedly set November 26 as the deadline for action on the sugar minimum selling price issue.
The settlement is expected to ease tensions between sugarcane growers and factory managements and facilitate the resumption of crushing operations. However, the continuing demands suggest that the pricing dispute could return to the political and administrative agenda during the forthcoming winter session of the Karnataka legislature.
The developments bring temporary relief to the sugar sector, even as the larger question of remunerative sugarcane pricing remains unresolved.
