Fusion of Sanskrit, Modern tech opens gateway between past wisdom and future possibilities : Nirmala

Chennai, Sep 15 (UNI) union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday evening said the fusion of Sanskrit and modern technology opens a remarkable gateway between the wisdom of the past and the possibilities of the future.
Speaking at the launch of Sanskrit Heritage Model and Platform linked to AI organised by the Madras Sanskrit College and Articul8 AI, she said Sanskrit is not merely an ancient language; it is a vast intellectual civilization—carrying within it centuries of literature, philosophy, science, mathematics, linguistics, spirituality, and cultural memory.
"Yet much of this extraordinary heritage remains beyond the reach of the modern learner because of its complexity, scale, and fragmented accessibility. This is where AI can transform what is possible. Human scholars dedicate lifetimes to mastering a fraction of this immense knowledge. AI can become an tireless companion to that scholarship—helping us navigate centuries of texts, connect manuscripts and oral
traditions, trace historical journeys, reveal relationships across disciplines, and illuminate Sanskrit’s remarkable influence across India and the world", she said, in her brief address.
Platforms like Articul8 can serve as a bridge between ancient knowledge and the digital generation—making profound ideas discoverable, intuitive, interactive, and accessible to anyone, anywhere. The goal is not to replace scholars, traditions, or the human pursuit of knowledge. It is to amplify them. Imagine a future where a student anywhere in the world can engage with the wisdom of ancient Sanskrit texts as naturally as they access modern knowledge; where manuscripts once accessible only to specialists can inspire millions; where AI helps preserve endangered intellectual traditions while opening them to new questions, new discoveries, and new generations, Ms NIrmala said.
By bringing together Sanskrit, scholarship, and artificial intelligence, we have an opportunity to ensure that ancient knowledge does not remain frozen in history—but continues to evolve, inspire, and contribute to the future of humanity. Technology at its best does not erase the past. It gives the past a new voice. And perhaps our greatest responsibility today is to ensure that the wisdom that shaped civilizations can continue to shape the generations yet to come, she said.
The initiative had received an important early impetus from the Finance Minister, who, during an earlier interaction with the Madras Sanskrit College, encouraged the institution to explore
the possibilities that Artificial Intelligence could open up for Sanskrit and the knowledge contained within its texts. That exploration subsequently brought the College and Articul8 together. The College brings to the collaboration more than a century of Sanskrit scholarship, access to an extensive scholarly ecosystem encompassing over 110,000 texts and several thousand manuscripts, and a community of scholars capable of testing, interpreting and validating the model’s responses.
The Sanskrit Heritage Model and Platform, an AI system built to work with Sanskrit language and texts was launched by her which would give users a way to explore knowledge and trace responses back
to their sources.
Developed under the project theme, “Ancient Knowledge. Living Intelligence”, the Sanskrit Heritage Model brings together the Madras Sanskrit College’s longstanding tradition of Sanskrit scholarship and Articul8’s advanced Generative AI capabilities.The system brings together multiple AI models, a Sanskrit language engine, a verification layer, all powered by Articul8’s technology platform. It has been designed to leverage the structure of Sanskrit, including its grammar and the way meaning is expressed across words, compounds and texts.
The College has been involved in testing the system and providing feedback based on its deep expertise in Sanskrit scholarship. Sanskrit’s textual tradition spans philosophy, mathematics, medicine and the sciences. But its highly structured grammar means that meaning depends on the precise form of a word, its context and its textual source — a level of precision that general-purpose AI models
routinely struggle to capture, often producing fluent but inaccurate answers.
The Sanskrit Heritage Model was built to close that gap, encoding the language’s own grammatical structure into how the system processes, learns and verifies information.
Earlier, Ms Nirmala attended the convocation of Dr MGR University in the city and delivered her address after presenting medals and certificates to meritorious students.
