Two days after his arrest, ex-DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh files bail plea in Spl Court

Chennai, Oct 28 (UNI) Two days after his arrest in the Rs 100 crore private school recognition graft case, senior DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Wednesday filed a bail petition in the Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act cases in the city and it was expected to be taken up for hearing tomorrow after listing.
Meanwhile, the CCB police conducted raids at the residences of prominent woman entrepreneur Shanmuga Priya in connection with the multi-crore scam.
With reports indicating that the ex-Minister was linked to corruption to the tune of Rs 400 crores, a 10-member team of CCB police descended on her Rams Ragasree Villa at Peungudi and were conducting searches since morning. She is the founder of Unique Threads (also known as Saree Story with Shanmuga Priya).
In his plea, Anbil contended that all the rules were followed while granting recognition and that he had not indulged in any wrongdoings. He also said he would not held liable if his name was wrongly misused by some people.
In his bail petition, Mahesh has stated that he followed the prescribed rules and procedures and did not indulge in any wrongdoing in the matter. He has sought bail while denying the allegations levelled against him.
Anbil Mahesh was arrested by the CCB police on Monday hours after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition. He was subsequently produced before the special court, which remanded him to judicial custody until November 6. He is currently lodged in Puzhal Central Prison.
He was the first ex-DMK Minister to be arrested in a corruption case after the TVK government headed by Chief Minister Vijay assumed office in May and started digging into various corrupt activities involving former Ministers during the previous DMK regime.
Police said the arrest was based on the material evidences collected during the raids conducted at Anbil's locations and those connected with him. One of the key aspect was that one Muthukumar, who was cited as the second accused in the case, was still absconding, though unconfirmed reports said his whereabouts were known to the ex-Minister.
While dismissing his advance bail plea, Mr Justice V.Lakshminaryanan observed that the ex-Minister was not an ordinary person and was politically influential who could tamper with the evidences. The Judge also said considering the huge involvement of money trail in the name of party funds (an euphemism for corruption coined by the present regime), which the police claimed as "financial terrorism", the beneficiaries could be identified only by interrogating the ex-Minister.
Accepting the police submissions, the Judge dismissed his advance bail plea as the investigations are at a preliminary stage following which, the CCB police arrested him.
