Opposition paries express concern over removal 42 lakh voters under SIR process in AP

Vijayawada, Sep 15 (UNI) Opposition parties, including the YSRCP, Congress, CPI, and CPI (M) on Tuesday expressed grave concern over the alleged removal of 44 lakh names from the electoral rolls and issuance of notices to 42 lakh people under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The parties voiced their apprehension at a round-table organised by the CPI here on the issue.
Speaking on the occasion, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Vice-president Kolanukonda Shivaji alleged that the massive deletions were carried out on flimsy grounds. He also charged the Election officials with denying political parties the required information on the rejections and removals of names.
“The BJP led Centre is trying for an America-type presidential regime in India, and the SIR process is being implemented as a prelude. Democracy in India is at peril,” the Congress leader said, calling upon all opposition parties to be united to oppose the unilateral SIR process. He also demanded that the Naidu government disclose whether it would implement the Common Civil Code in Andhra Pradesh.
CPI national Secretary K Ramakrishna, terming the SIR as a murder of democracy, said, “We have heard about rigging in the elections, but we are now witnessing removal of lakhs of names from the electoral rolls and issuing notices to lakhs of people under the SIR. The entire SIR process is erroneous and flawed.”
YSRCP leader and former MLA, Malladi Vishunu, CPM State Committee member Ch Babu Rao and former Additional DGP AB Venkateswara Rao were among those who spoke against the SIR.
Meanwhile, leaders of various political parties submitted a representation to Chief Electoral Officer Vivek Yadav urging him to extend the SIR process till this month end, providing voter rights to over 22 lakh people who migrated from the state and take steps to rectify errors and flaws in the SIR process.
CPI State Secretary G Eeshwaraiah, CPI (M) State Secretary V Srinivasa Rao, former Minister V Sobhanadreswara Rao, retired IAS officer Bandla Srinivas, retired IPS officer and convener of Centre for Liberty AB Venkateswara Rao were among those who met the CEO.
