BJP alleges bogus voting in Karnataka MLC polls, seeks action against Cong leaders

Bengaluru, Oct 25 (UNI) The BJP on Sunday accused the Congress of electoral malpractice in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections, alleging that a woman voted fraudulently in the name of Asha Patil, wife of Haveri District Congress Committee president Sanjeevkumar Neeralagi, in the West Graduates' constituency.
The alleged incident took place at a polling station set up at the Haveri Tahsildar's office, with the BJP claiming that Congress worker Shilpa Badammanavar cast the vote in Asha Patil's name.
The BJP also alleged that Karnataka Minister Rudrappa Lamani was seen entering the polling station with the woman, and demanded an explanation from the Congress leadership and stringent legal action against those found responsible.
Neeralagi said his wife was unwell and had not gone to vote. He said he learnt on Friday night that someone had allegedly voted in her name and questioned how polling officials had permitted the vote without properly verifying the voter's identity.
He said he would seek legal advice and lodge a formal complaint with the election authorities and the Election Commission of India.
However, Neeralagi defended Lamani, saying the minister had no connection with the alleged incident and that public figures were often photographed with people.
Haveri District Election Officer Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar said no written complaint had been received from any political party so far.
However, the administration was examining the video footage circulating on social media and the available CCTV evidence, he said, adding that further legal action would be taken based on the findings.
The allegations have triggered a political controversy over the conduct of the West Graduates' constituency election, with the BJP questioning the verification procedures followed at the polling station.
The allegations have not yet been independently established, and the election authorities' examination of the available evidence is awaited.
